On June 9th, about 100 miles south of Port Fourchon, Louisiana, the Deepwater Nautilus, which is of very similar design to the Deepwater Horizon and also built by Hyundai Heavy industries in Korea, suffered a serious accident when the drill line parted, dropping the traveling block to the drill floor. The well remained under control, and fortunately there were no injuries. The traveling block, which moves the drillpipe in and out of the hole, weighs about 80 tons. The accident, which caused some damage to the driller’s shack and the drill floor, is being investigated, and the rig will be replaced by the Deepwater Millennium while it is under repair.
